It's casual but still ultra sophisticated and gives a bit of extra class to a bag that could be worn anywhere from your kid's soccer game to lunch with clients. It's roomy enough for everyday but won't make you feel like you're lugging a 9th graders book bag around (which are seriously heavy, someone should work on that). You might think that running a wildly successful fashion brand and being a single mother to three children would leave very little time for much else. But Tory Burch manages to do all of that and help women in need. She recently hosted her first Tory Burch Foundation mentor event, and she sat down to talk to us about it.

HP: You Can you tell us a little bit about the event?
TB: The Kids Tory Burch Flats empowers women through microfinance domestically -- but entrepreneurs also need advice and guidance. So we invited nine mentors and over 100 women who own small businesses to share their ideas and experiences. It was very organic. We were so immersed in conversation that the event ran an hour over.

HP: Who are the mentors that attended?
TB: People who have been successful in their respective fields, such as Emily Rafferty from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jessica Igoe from American Express and Vera Wang's Mario Grauso.

HP: What kind of advice did the mentees need?
TB: They discussed everything from challenges and worries to business strategies and how to take their companies to the next level. Some women talked about e-commerce, while others talked about financial plans. It was an open forum for entrepreneurs to ask anything they wanted about their businesses.

HP: What advice did you give to the budding entrepreneurs?
TB: The most important advice I can give is to have a unique Tory Burch Reva Flats point of view and have the tenacity to follow through.

HP:Who are/were your mentors?
TB: My family has always been incredibly supportive. I've also been lucky to work with amazing people in the fashion industry, and I learned a great deal from each job I had.

It is no secret that the fashion industry has been hit hard by the recession. Therefore, come September 10th 2009, retailers will unite for an event called “Fashion’s Night Out.” This will entail everything from special in-store events to parties, personal appearances by designers and celebrities, live music, fashion shows, freebies, charity tie-ins, and extended shopping hours till 11 p.m., Tory Burch Boots encouraging shoppers to spend their hard-earned dollars . The event will coincide with the start of New York Fashion Week, and so far approximately 100 retails have agreed to participate.

Sadove, Brendan Hoffman, Ron Frasch, Jim Gold, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch, Reed Krakoff, Tommy Hilfiger, Francisco Costa, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Rachel Roy, Nicole Miller, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, Andrew Rosen, Simon Doonan, Julie Gilhart, Anne Keating, Martine Reardon, Ken Downing, and Steven Kolb.

The initiative was spearheaded by Tory Burch HandBags U.S. Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who told WWD that the event is also slated to happen internationally in cities where Vogue has editions, including Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Japan, China, Taiwan, Russia, Brazil, and India. Further, there is a charity component to the project – all proceeds from the sale of limited edition t-shirts, which will retail for $30 to $35, will go to support the National September 11th Memorial & Museum.
